Chapter 6

Aaron

When Aaron awoke, he found a folded piece of paper on the nightstand. He unfolded it and looked at the messy handwriting.

“If I’m not here, come downstairs. Ignore any shouting. I’m gonna use my brothers for target practice.”

Aaron blinked. He was tired but that really didn’t make sense. He was hungry though, so he rolled out of bed and got dressed, hoping Jake made good on his promise of dinner.

As he approached the kitchen, he heard a noise which made him jump. It sounded as if someone was banging the table.

“You don’t know, do you. You have no idea who he is or why he’s here.”

Aaron wasn’t sure which brother had said that.

“Gruff had no idea who Lyle was, but he still brought him home,” Jake said icily. “And Vinny. Damien brought Vinny into our house. And who the fuck is Matt?”

“You found Matt,” Alec pointed out. “You met him first and brought him home.”

Aaron knit his brows. Had Jake been Matt’s Daddy?

“You think my boy is a spy. That’s ridiculous. I might point out he’s been working at the bar for over a year, long before Gruff found Lyle.”

Aaron rocked back on his heels. What the hell? Alec thought he was a spy! Oh hell, no. He stalked into the kitchen and fixed Alec with a glare that should have skewered him to his seat.

“You think I’m spying on you?” he asked incredulously.

“You know about Kingdom Mountain,” Alec mumbled.

Jake sat back in his seat with a satisfied expression and folded his arms.

“Because you used to hold meetings in the Tin Bar. I told you that you think bartenders are deaf. And waitresses. And motel staff.” Aaron threw his hands in the air. “I’m not a spy. I’m a bartender. That’s it. Nothing else. You can check me out if you must.”

Alec pressed his lips together. “I did.”

“You did what?” Jake roared, springing to his feet.

“I had to,” Alec said defensively.

Aaron’s heart pounded hard, and blood rushed in his ears. “And what did you find?”

“Whoever you are, you’re not Aaron Yates,” Alec said flatly. “You’re a bartender just as you said, but you only go back seven years. The real Aaron Yates died in 2001 aged four years old. So who are you?”

All eyes were on him. Aaron wanted to run away, but they’d catch him easily and send him back to the cage. Then arms were tight around him, and he didn’t know whether they were home or hell, but he hung on to the comfort.

“It’s okay, it’s okay,” Jake murmured in his ear. “I’ve got you, Aaron. I won’t let you go.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Aaron said, but he stayed where he was, because as scary as it was to be in Jake’s arms, it was scarier to be alone.

He stayed there for a long time, until he looked up to see everyone had gone except Alec, Gruff, and Damien.

“Are you ready to talk?” Jake asked gently.

“It’s none of your business who I am,” Aaron said. “You could have put me in danger just investigating me.
